M-Key NVMe adapter for desktop PCs

This RIITOP NVTPCE16XB adapter converts a single M-Key M.2 NVMe solid-state drive to a PCIe 3.0 x16 add-in card. It targets desktop owners whose motherboards lack an M.2 slot but have a free PCI Express expansion slot. The card accepts 2280, 2260, 2242 and 2230 form-factor drives and works with Windows, macOS and Linux without extra drivers.

Passive PCB with x4/x8/x16 slot flexibility

The board measures 105.0 by 44.0 by 11.0 millimetres and weighs 20 grams. A standard PCIe edge connector lets it seat in x4, x8 or x16 slots, running at 3.0, 2.0 or 1.0 speeds depending on the motherboard. No external power cable or active cooling is required; the drive draws power directly from the slot. Only M-Key NVMe modules are supported — SATA-based B-Key or B+M-Key drives will not function.

Adds NVMe storage to older desktops

The adapter upgrades systems that have spare PCIe lanes but no native M.2 connector, letting owners reuse compatible NVMe drives such as Samsung 950 Pro, 960 EVO or Intel 600P series. Boot support depends on the motherboard firmware; some older boards cannot start from an NVMe device. Bandwidth drops to 16 Gbps in a PCIe 2.0 slot and lower in 1.0, so the performance gain is worthwhile when the platform provides at least PCIe 2.0 x4 electrical connectivity.
