Five-bay SATA expansion
The Synology DX517 adds five hot-swappable drive bays to compatible DiskStation units over a single eSATA link. It accepts both 3.5-inch and 2.5-inch SATA hard drives or SSDs, letting you grow raw capacity up to 80 TB without downtime. The diskless chassis ships with an eSATA cable, power cord and screwless trays for quick deployment.
Suits owners of DS1517, DS1517+, DS1817 or DS1817+
This unit only works with the four DiskStation models listed above; any other NAS, server or PC cannot attach to its proprietary eSATA port. Buyers who need more than five extra bays, a different host interface or a standalone NAS should look at a separate platform.
Fits beside the host NAS on a shelf
The expansion unit draws up to 29.9 watts during access and 2.4 watts in hibernation from its internal 200-watt supply, which auto-ranges from 100 to 240 volts AC. It operates between 5 and 40 degrees Celsius, so normal office cooling is sufficient. No extra switch, router or controller is required — just the host DiskStation and the supplied cable.
