20 W output with gigabit data

The splitter delivers up to 5 V at 4 A (20 W) when fed from an 802.3at PoE+ switch or injector, and passes 10/100/1000 Mbps traffic through its RJ45 port. With an 802.3af source the available power drops below the 4 A rating, so high-draw boards may become unstable. The Ethernet cable can run up to 300 feet from the power source, but the data pair carries no voltage after the split.

Replaces a wall wart and short USB lead

It removes the need for a local AC adapter and lets you locate the device wherever a PoE cable reaches. The step up is worthwhile when you already have PoE+ infrastructure or when running mains power is impractical.
