M.2 to U.2 NVMe adapter

This PCIe 5.0 adapter connects a U.2 NVMe SSD to an M.2 2280 M key slot on a motherboard. The cable measures 1.6ft and uses a left exit orientation. It supports theoretical speeds up to 128 Gbps and is backward compatible with PCIe 4.0, 3.0, 2.0 and 1.0 devices. No drivers are required.

Build integration and power

The adapter plugs straight into an available M.2 2280 M key interface and frees the U.2 drive to sit elsewhere in the chassis. A SATA power cable must be connected to the 15-pin power connector on the adapter for the drive to function. The 50cm length suits typical desktop or server layouts.

Upgrade path and limits

This adapter replaces a direct M.2 NVMe installation when a U.2 drive is preferred for capacity or endurance. The jump is worth it when the motherboard has a spare M.2 2280 M key slot and the builder can supply SATA power. It does not serve builds that lack an M.2 M key interface or that need more than four PCIe lanes.
