Passive operation with no heat spreader means zero fan noise and no additional power draw beyond the 1.5V DDR3 specification. Power off the workstation, open the chassis, and seat each module in the correct channel order shown in the HP service manual; the step most often missed is populating all four channels in the prescribed sequence so the registered ECC memory initialises properly.
The modules have no heat spreaders and no moving parts, so no routine maintenance is required; replacement is only necessary if a module fails or if you later upgrade to a higher capacity kit.
The memory controller will operate at the speed of the slowest installed module, so mixing with slower DDR3 DIMMs caps throughput at the lower rate before thermal or voltage limits are reached.
