The Buffalo TeraStation 71210 ships with twelve 8 TB enterprise-class drives pre-installed in RAID 6, delivering 80 TB of usable capacity out of the box. It targets IT departments that need a high-capacity, high-availability file server without sourcing drives separately. Four 10GbE ports and two PCIe Gen 4x8 slots provide headroom for SSD caching or faster uplinks. The closed-system design and Btrfs file system aim to simplify administration and data integrity.

Check rack space, power and network before ordering

The 2U chassis measures 29.0 by 18.9 by 3.5 inches and weighs 41.7 lbs, so verify rack depth and load rating. Maximum power draw is 500 W from a 100–240 V internal supply; ensure your PDU and circuit can sustain that load. The unit operates from 32 °F to 104 °F at 10–85 % humidity, so confirm your server room stays within those limits. You will need four free 10GbE switch ports and Cat 6a or better cabling to use the onboard network interfaces at rated speed.

Bundled software and accessories simplify deployment

NASNavigator2 discovers and mounts the appliance on the network without manual IP configuration. NovaBACKUP Buffalo Edition includes one server and ten workstation licences for scheduled file and image backups. The package also supplies a quick setup guide, AC cable and front-panel key so the unit can be racked and secured immediately. Two USB 3.2 Gen 1 and two USB 2.0 ports allow external archive drives or a UPS connection without extra adapters.

Does the TeraStation ship with drives and rails, or do I need to order them separately?

The unit arrives with twelve 8 TB enterprise hard drives pre-installed, a quick setup guide, AC power cable and front-panel key. Rack-mount rails are not included and must be purchased separately.

Should I keep the 16 GB DDR4 ECC memory or upgrade to 32 GB using the OP-ECCMEM-16G kit?

The installed 16 GB DDR4 ECC suits most file-serving and backup workloads. Add the second 16 GB module only if you plan heavy virtualization, many simultaneous snapshots or SSD caching that will benefit from the extra RAM.

The spec says 96 TB raw — what usable space will I see after the default RAID 6 configuration?

Shipping in RAID 6 leaves approximately 80 TB usable capacity. You can reconfigure to RAID 0 for the full 96 TB, but any single drive failure would then cause data loss.
