1U rack server for small workloads

The Dell PowerEdge R330 fits a single Intel Xeon E3-1220 v5 quad-core processor running at 3 GHz and 8 GB of DDR4 memory. It includes four 2 TB 7.2K SATA drives managed by a PERC H330 controller supporting RAID 0, 1, 5, 10, 50 and 60. Dual 350 W redundant power supplies and iDRAC8 remote management complete the package for basic file, print or web serving.

Upgrades from limited storage or single-drive setups

The four hot-plug 3.5-inch bays let you replace a single-drive desktop or older 2-bay unit with up to 40 TB of raw capacity. Adding a second processor is not possible because the board supports only one CPU. The jump is worth it when you need hardware RAID redundancy and lights-out management in a 1U footprint without moving to a larger chassis.

Limited by single-socket design and PCIe 3.0 slots

Memory tops out at 64 GB across four DIMM slots running up to 2400 MT/s, so memory-heavy virtualization will hit a ceiling. Two PCIe 3.0 slots plus one internal storage slot restrict add-in cards to a single low-profile GPU, 10 GbE adapter or extra storage controller. Networking stays at 1 GbE unless a daughter card is swapped, and the Matrox G200eR2 video provides only basic console output.
