The Dell PowerEdge R540 is a 2U rack server equipped with two Intel Xeon Gold 5118 processors running at 2.30 GHz with 12 cores each. It ships with 128 GB of DDR4 2666 MHz registered ECC memory across eight modules. The platform targets virtualization, database hosting and file-serving workloads that demand multi-core throughput and large memory capacity.

Hot-swap bays and redundant platinum power

Eight 3.5-inch SAS/SATA drive trays are accessible from the front and support hot-swap replacement without downtime. The Dell PERC H330 controller provides RAID 0, 1, 5, 10 and 50 plus pass-through mode for direct disk access. Dual 750 W 80+ Platinum power supplies operate in redundant hot-swap configuration. iDRAC9 Enterprise enables remote firmware updates, power control and console redirection over the network.

Scales to 1 TB memory and dual-CPU maximum

The motherboard offers 16 DDR4 slots, allowing expansion from the installed 128 GB up to 1 TB when all sockets are populated. Both CPU sockets are already filled, so processor upgrades require replacing the existing Gold 5118 chips. The two 1 GbE RJ45 ports handle management and light data traffic; heavier network throughput would need an add-in card. No operating system or drives are included, so deployment begins with storage provisioning and OS installation.
