The Dell PowerEdge R640 is a 1U rack server built for dense scale-out data centre computing. It ships with two Intel Xeon Silver 4110 processors, each running at 2.1 GHz with eight cores. The system includes 512 GB of DDR4 registered ECC memory across sixteen 32 GB modules. Eight 400 GB SATA SSDs and a PERC H730P controller provide the storage foundation.

SATA SSD Throughput and Controller Limits

The eight installed SSDs use the SATA 6 Gb/s interface, so sustained throughput is bounded by that link speed. The PERC H730P controller supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 plus pass-through mode with its 2 GB cache. Twelve-gigabit SAS backplane bandwidth is available, but the SATA drives cannot exceed their native six-gigabit rate. Network connectivity relies on a quad-port daughter card with two 1 GbE and two 10 Gb SFP+ ports.

DDR4 Memory Ceiling Determines Fit

The platform supports a maximum of 3 TB of DDR4 across twenty-four DIMM slots. The current 512 GB configuration occupies sixteen slots, leaving eight slots open for expansion. The LGA 3647 socket and Intel C620 chipset limit processor upgrades to the compatible Xeon Scalable family.
