The system includes 64 GB of DDR4 registered ECC memory across four 16 GB modules. A PERC H730P controller with 2 GB cache manages the two installed 800 GB SATA SSDs.

Suited for virtualisation hosts

This configuration fits environments that need dual-processor compute in a single rack unit with redundant 750 W power supplies. It is not for buyers who need more than two processor sockets or who require storage interfaces beyond the SATA and SAS connectivity provided by the H730P controller. The four 10 GbE SFP+ and two 1 GbE ports support high-throughput networking, while iDRAC9 Enterprise enables remote management.

PERC H730P RAID controller decides storage options

The installed H730P controller supports RAID levels 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 plus pass-through mode. Its 2 GB battery-backed cache accelerates write performance for the two 800 GB SATA SSDs. The chassis provides eight 2.5-inch drive bays with a SATA backplane, so additional drives must use the SAS or SATA interface supported by this controller.

What comes with the server and what must I add?

The R640 ships with two Xeon Silver 4116 CPUs, 64 GB DDR4 in four 16 GB modules, two 800 GB SATA SSDs, a PERC H730P 2 GB controller, an X520/I350 quad-port network card (two 1 GbE and two 10 Gb SFP+), iDRAC9 Enterprise, two 750 W platinum PSUs, rails and bezel. You must add any extra drives, memory or OS licences.

Should I choose the 800 GB SSDs or a larger capacity?

The unit includes two 800 GB SATA SSDs configured on the H730P RAID controller. If your workload needs more space, the 2.5-inch bays accept additional SATA SSDs or HDDs up to the controller’s 12 Gb/s limit.

What does the 2.1 GHz base clock mean for real workloads?

Each of the 24 cores runs at 2.1 GHz base with 3.0 GHz turbo, giving strong multi-thread throughput for virtualisation, databases and scale-out tasks while the H730P cache and 2400 MHz DDR4 keep latency low.
