Dual-socket 1U rack server

The Dell PowerEdge R640 is a 1U rack server built for dense scale-out data centre workloads. Two Intel Xeon Silver 4116 processors deliver 24 cores at 2.10 GHz with 3.0 GHz turbo. 512 GB of DDR4 registered ECC memory is installed across 16 modules. Eight 400 GB SATA SSDs provide high-speed storage in the front bays.

The system uses two LGA 3647 sockets and both are populated, so no further CPU upgrades are possible. Twenty-four DDR4 slots are present with sixteen occupied by 32 GB modules, leaving eight slots for expansion up to 3 TB. Eight 2.5-inch SATA drive bays are fully filled with the included SSDs. The PERC H730P controller supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60.

Redundant 750 W platinum power supplies

Dual hot-swap 750 watt platinum-efficiency power supplies provide redundancy for continuous operation. The 1U chassis uses internal fans sized for the rack form factor to cool both processors and memory under load. iDRAC 9 Enterprise enables remote monitoring of thermal sensors and fan speeds. Network connectivity includes two 1 GbE and two 10 Gb SFP+ ports on the daughter card.

Should I choose a different CPU or memory configuration?

The server is already at the maximum of 2 processors and 512 GB installed. You can add up to 3 TB total using the 8 free DDR4 slots if your workload needs more memory.

What does the 2.1 GHz base clock mean for real workloads?

Each of the 24 cores runs at 2.1 GHz base and can turbo to 3.0 GHz, giving strong multi-threaded throughput for virtualization, databases and dense compute tasks.
