The Dell PowerEdge R640 is a 1U rack server built for dense scale-out data centre computing. It ships with two Intel Xeon Silver 4116 processors, each running at 2.1 GHz with 12 cores. The system includes 128 GB of DDR4 registered ECC memory across eight 16 GB modules. Dual 400 GB SATA SSDs provide the initial storage footprint.

Sustained Load Behaviour

Redundant hot-swap 750 W platinum power supplies keep the platform running during continuous operation. The PERC H730P controller with 2 GB cache and battery backup maintains write performance and data integrity under heavy I/O. Dual Xeon processors deliver 24 total cores with a 3.0 GHz turbo frequency for prolonged multi-threaded workloads. iDRAC 9 Enterprise enables remote monitoring and management without physical access.

Interface Practical Limits

The SATA 6 Gb/s interface on the installed SSDs caps sequential throughput below the controller’s 12 Gb/s SAS capability. Four 1 GbE and two 10 Gb SFP+ ports on the X520/I350 daughter card define the network ceiling. Twenty-four DDR4 slots support up to 3 TB of memory when all slots are populated. Eight 2.5-inch drive bays set the physical storage expansion boundary.
