The Dell PowerEdge R640 is a 1U rack-mount server configured with four 3.5-inch drive bays. It ships with one Intel Xeon Silver 4116 processor running at 2.1GHz and 64GB of DDR4 ECC registered memory. A PERC H740P RAID controller and dual 750W power supplies are installed. The iDRAC9 Enterprise licence provides remote management. No hard drives are included.

This configuration suits workloads that benefit from a large memory pool relative to core count, such as in-memory databases or virtualisation hosts with dense VM ratios. Buyers who need two processors or more than twelve cores per socket should look at a different specification. The single-socket layout limits the maximum thread count available for heavily parallel tasks. Expansion to a second CPU is possible but requires additional parts.

Four 3.5-inch SATA drive bays

The chassis provides four hot-plug 3.5-inch bays wired for SATA drives and managed by the PERC H740P controller. This bay count determines how many large-capacity drives you can install internally without adding external enclosures.
