The PowerEdge R730 is a 2U rack server built around two Intel Xeon E5-2683 v4 processors, each with 16 cores running at 2.1 GHz and a 3.0 GHz turbo frequency. It targets midsize and large enterprises running data warehouses, e-commerce platforms, virtual desktop infrastructure or high-performance computing nodes. The platform ships with 64 GB of DDR4 registered ECC memory across four 16 GB modules.

PERC H730 RAID and 12 Gb/s SAS/SATA limits

Storage is managed by a Dell PERC H730 controller with 1 GB cache and battery backup, supporting RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 plus pass-through mode. The 12 Gb/s SAS/SATA interface caps sustained throughput at the controller and drive link level, so arrays of many drives will saturate the bus before individual SSD limits are reached. Eight 2.5-inch hot-swap bays restrict the maximum device count without external enclosures.

64 GB DDR4 headroom to 1.5 TB

The system arrives with 64 GB installed in four of 24 DDR4 slots, leaving 20 slots free for expansion up to the 1.5 TB platform maximum. Two 400 GB SATA SSDs provide low-latency boot and cache tiers, but capacity-bound workloads such as large databases or dense virtualization will require additional drives or external storage. Memory-heavy applications can scale within the chassis, while storage-heavy deployments quickly exceed the internal bay count.
