The Dell PowerEdge R730 is a 2U rack server built around a single Intel Xeon E5-2609v3 six-core processor running at 1.9 GHz. It ships with 16 GB of DDR4 memory and two 1 TB 7.2 K SATA drives managed by a Perc H730 RAID controller. Dual 750 W redundant power supplies and eight hot-plug 3.5-inch drive bays make it suited for growing storage workloads.

Tool-less drive and memory installation

Eight hot-plug bays accept 3.5-inch SAS or SATA drives with included trays so storage can be added without shutting down. The 24 DDR4 DIMM slots are arranged 12 per processor and support capacities up to 128 GB per module at 2400 MT/s, though actual speed depends on the installed CPU. A second processor must be added before the second bank of 12 slots becomes usable.

PCIe 3.0 and 1 GbE connectivity ceiling

The system provides up to seven PCIe 3.0 slots plus a dedicated PERC slot for the RAID controller. Networking defaults to a four-port 1 GbE daughter card with optional 10 GbE upgrades available. Maximum raw storage capacity reaches 64 TB across the eight bays, and total memory tops out at 1536 GB when both processor sockets are populated.
