The Dell PowerEdge R730 is a 2U rack server built for dense storage workloads. It ships with one Xeon E5-2650 v3 processor running at 2.3GHz with 10 cores and 384GB of DDR4 ECC registered memory installed. The 8LFF chassis accepts up to eight 3.5-inch SATA or SAS drives for high-capacity arrays.

Single CPU leaves room for a second processor

One socket is populated and a second is free, allowing a simple upgrade to 20 cores without changing the motherboard. The PERC H730 RAID controller handles the drive bays and frees the CPU from parity calculations. Dual 495W supplies provide redundancy, and iDRAC8 Enterprise gives full remote control over a dedicated network port.

Sustained throughput for cold data

The 25MB last-level cache on the Xeon keeps frequent metadata close during long backup or archive jobs.
