The Dell PowerEdge R730xd is a 2U rack server equipped with twelve 3.5-inch drive bays. Two Intel Xeon E5-2680 v3 processors provide 24 total cores at 2.5 GHz with 3.3 GHz turbo. 512 GB of DDR4 registered ECC memory occupies 16 of 24 slots. The PERC H730 controller manages the twelve 4 TB 7.2K SATA drives.

Upgrade from smaller capacity

This configuration replaces servers that cannot hold twelve 3.5-inch drives or that lack dual-socket compute density. The jump is worth it when workloads demand both high local storage capacity and 24 cores for virtualization, databases or HPC data nodes. The H730 controller supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60.

Verify rack depth, power and network cabling

Confirm your rack accommodates a 2U chassis with included rails and bezel. Two 750 W platinum power supplies require matching PDU connectors. The X520/I350 daughter card provides two 1 GbE and two 10 Gb SFP+ ports; ensure compatible transceivers and switch ports are available. Memory expansion to 1.5 TB uses remaining DDR4 slots.
