The PowerEdge R730xd fits twelve 3.5-inch bays in a 2U rack height, giving midsize and large enterprises a compact platform for data warehouses, e-commerce, VDI, databases or HPC data nodes. Two Xeon E5-2640 v3 processors at 2.6 GHz with 3.4 GHz turbo provide sixteen total cores, while 128 GB of DDR4-2133 registered ECC memory across eight 16 GB modules supports heavy multitasking.

PERC H730 controller and quad-port networking

The H730 1 GB mini controller enables RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50, 60 and pass-through across the twelve installed 4 TB 7.2K SATA drives, and its battery protects cached writes during power loss. The Intel X520/I350 daughter card adds two 1 GbE and two 10 Gb SFP+ ports on a single low-profile bracket, simplifying top-of-rack cabling. iDRAC 8 Enterprise provides full out-of-band management with virtual console and lifecycle automation.

Verify rack depth, rail clearance and SFP+ optics

The 2U chassis requires a four-post rack with sufficient depth for the included Ready Rails; measure the cabinet before ordering. Network connectivity uses SFP+ transceivers that are not included, so source compatible 10 Gb optics or direct-attach cables separately. Memory expansion uses the remaining sixteen DDR4 slots up to 1.5 TB total, but only registered ECC modules are supported.
