Dual-socket Xeon 2U server

This new Dell PowerEdge R730xd mounts two Xeon E5-2660 v3 processors, each with 10 cores at 2.6 GHz and a 3.3 GHz turbo. Sixty-four gigabytes of DDR4 registered ECC memory are installed across four 16 GB modules. The chassis provides twelve 3.5-inch drive bays populated with 4 TB 7.2 K SATA disks behind a PERC H730 controller with 1 GB cache.

Database and virtualisation nodes

The configuration suits workloads that benefit from high core counts and large spindle capacity, such as data warehousing, VDI hosts or HPC data nodes. Buyers who need solid-state latency or more than two sockets should look elsewhere.

PERC H730 RAID controller

The storage controller supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 plus pass-through mode, backed by a battery-protected 1 GB cache. This single component determines the RAID levels and write-caching behaviour available to the twelve SATA drives.
