The Dell PowerEdge R730XD is a 2U rack server that fits twelve hot-plug 3.5-inch SAS or SATA drives and ships with three 2 TB 7.2K SAS drives behind a PERC H330 RAID controller. A single Xeon E5-2650 v3 delivers ten cores at 2.3 GHz with 20 threads, while 48 GB of DDR4 occupies 24 DIMM slots. Two 750 W redundant power supplies and a DVD-ROM complete the chassis.

This configuration targets archives, backup targets or surveillance recording where twelve large drives and hardware RAID 0, 1, 5, 10, 50 or 60 matter. It does not suit buyers who need a second processor installed, GPU compute, or more than the single-socket memory ceiling of 48 GB. Networking is limited to four 1 GbE ports unless an optional NDC is added.

Should I choose the single 10-core 2.3 GHz CPU or add a second identical processor?

The board supports two sockets; a second E5-2650 v3 doubles cores to 20 and enables the remaining 12 DIMM slots for up to 1 536 GB total memory. Add it if your workload needs more threads or RAM bandwidth; otherwise the single CPU configuration runs cooler and uses less power.

What does the 48 GB DDR4 figure mean once the server is running?

You get 48 GB installed across the first processor's 12 slots. The memory controller runs up to 2 400 MT/s but actual speed depends on the E5-2650 v3 capability. All 12 second-processor slots stay empty until a second CPU is fitted, so usable capacity is 48 GB until you expand.
