The DELL PowerEdge R740 is a 2U rack server fitted with two Intel Xeon Gold 6142 processors running at 2.6 GHz with 16 cores each. It targets organisations that need dense compute for virtualisation, databases or high-performance workloads in a standard rack footprint. The platform supports up to two processors and 24 DDR4 memory slots.

H730P controller and quad-port networking

The bundled PERC H730P 2 GB controller adds RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 plus pass-through modes with battery-backed cache. An Intel X520/I350 daughter card supplies two 1 GbE and two 10 Gb SFP+ ports, while iDRAC 9 Enterprise enables full out-of-band management. Redundant 750 W platinum power supplies and ready rails complete the package.

768 GB DDR4 with 3 TB ceiling

The system ships with 768 GB of registered ECC DDR4-2666 across all 24 slots, leaving no free DIMM positions for expansion without replacing modules. Maximum supported capacity is 3 TB, so memory-heavy workloads can grow substantially. Eight 2.5-inch SAS/SATA trays are present but empty, so storage capacity depends entirely on the drives you add.
