Dell PowerEdge R740 2U Server

The Dell PowerEdge R740 is a 2U rack server built for virtualisation, database and compute workloads. It ships with a single Intel Gold 6142 processor, 128GB of DDR4 memory and four 2TB 7.2K SAS drives managed by an H740P controller. Remote management is provided by iDRAC9 Enterprise.

Upgrade from older 2U platforms

Replaces earlier 2U servers that lack PCIe Gen 3 slot density or integrated 10Gb networking. The jump is worthwhile when workloads need up to eight PCIe Gen 3 slots, dual 10Gb RJ45 ports and redundant 1100W power supplies in a single chassis.

Capacity and headroom

The configuration delivers 128GB DDR4 across eight 16GB modules running at 2666 MT/s and 8TB of raw SAS storage in a 2.5-inch bay layout. Memory headroom remains for additional DIMMs, while the eight-bay chassis supports further 2.5-inch drives. Compute ceiling is set by the single 16-core Gold 6142 at 2.6GHz with 19.25MB cache.
