The PowerEdge R740 fits two Intel Xeon Platinum 8160 processors, each with 24 cores running at 2.1 GHz, into a 2U rack chassis. It ships with 256 GB of DDR4 registered ECC memory across eight 32 GB modules. The platform targets virtualization, database and high-performance computing tasks that demand high core counts and large memory capacity.

Sustained throughput from dual CPUs

Under continuous load the two 24-core Xeons maintain a 3.7 GHz turbo frequency while the PERC H730P controller delivers 12 Gb/s SAS and SATA bandwidth with battery-backed cache. The quad-port network daughter card provides two 1 GbE and two 10 Gb SFP+ links for steady data flow. Redundant 750 W platinum power supplies keep the system running if one unit fails.

Hot-swap drive trays and remote management built in

Eight 2.5-inch hot-swap trays accept SAS or SATA drives without tools, and the chassis supports redundant hot-swap power supplies for non-stop service. iDRAC 9 Enterprise gives full out-of-band control over network, including virtual console and power cycling. ReadyRails and a front bezel are included for standard rack mounting.
