The Dell PowerEdge R740 fits two Intel Xeon Gold 5118 processors, each with 12 cores at 2.3 GHz and a 3.2 GHz turbo frequency. It ships with 64 GB of DDR4-2400 registered ECC memory across four 16 GB modules, leaving 20 of the 24 DIMM slots open for expansion up to the 3 TB platform maximum.

Storage controller and drive limits

The PERC H730P controller provides 2 GB cache and supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 plus pass-through mode over 12 Gb/s SAS and SATA links. The 2.5-inch drive cage holds eight bays, but only two 300 GB 10 K SAS drives are installed, so additional drives must be sourced to fill the remaining six bays.

Installation notes and common issues

Rails and a front bezel are included, simplifying rack mounting in standard 2U spaces. Dual 750 W platinum power supplies are hot-swappable, yet the server draws significant power under full CPU load, so verify PDU capacity before deployment. The iDRAC 9 Enterprise module enables remote management, but its dedicated network port must be cabled separately to function.
