The Dell PowerEdge R740 is a 2U rack server built around two Intel Xeon Gold 6142 processors running at 2.6 GHz with 16 cores each. It ships with 64 GB of DDR4 2666 MHz registered ECC memory across four modules. The platform targets virtualisation hosts, database nodes and compute clusters that need dual-socket density in a standard rack footprint.

Hot-swap bays and redundant power

Eight 2.5-inch drive bays accept SAS or SATA drives and the system includes eight 300 GB 10K SAS disks. A PERC H730P controller with 2 GB cache supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 plus pass-through mode. Dual 750 W platinum power supplies and hot-swap fans provide full redundancy. The board offers 24 DDR4 slots with a 3 TB maximum, so plan any memory expansion using registered ECC modules only.
