The Dell PowerEdge R740xd fits 24 hot-swap 2.5-inch bays into a two-socket 2U chassis. Two Intel Xeon Gold 6130 processors provide 16 cores each at 2.1 GHz with 3.7 GHz turbo. 512 GB of DDR4 2666 MHz registered ECC memory fills 16 of the 24 DIMM slots. The system targets software-defined storage, service-provider hosting and virtual desktop infrastructure workloads.

Thermals and power under load

Redundant 1100 W platinum-efficiency power supplies share the load and maintain operation if one unit fails. Hot-swap fans and the 2U airflow path keep both CPUs and the 24 SSDs within thermal limits during sustained write-heavy workloads. Acoustic output remains at typical rack-server levels for a dual-processor 2U system. Power draw scales with CPU utilisation and storage controller activity.

Controller, networking and management extras

The PERC H730P 2 GB controller supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50, 60 and pass-through modes with battery-backed cache. A quad-port daughter card adds two 1 GbE and two 10 Gb SFP+ links for storage and management traffic separation. iDRAC 9 Enterprise enables full remote console, power control and firmware updates over a dedicated network port. ReadyRails and a front bezel are included for immediate rack installation.
