Measures distance from 4 to 400 cm with ±25 mm accuracy at up to 50 Hz over I2C
The Pimoroni VL53L1X breakout is a time-of-flight distance sensor for makers and developers building IoT edge devices. It measures from 4cm to 400cm with a 27° field of view and up to 50Hz ranging frequency. Accuracy is ±25mm, or ±20mm in dark conditions. The board communicates over I2C at address 0x29 and works with 3.3V or 5V logic.
Upgrade from basic ultrasonic or infrared modules when you need laser-based precision up to four metres and faster sampling. The jump is worth it for robotics, liquid-level monitoring or presence detection where ±25mm accuracy and 50Hz updates matter. Reverse polarity protection adds durability during prototyping.
Verify that no other device on your bus uses address 0x29 before connecting. Ensure your controller supports 3.3V or 5V I2C levels to match the breakout. Confirm the 27° field of view suits your mounting position and that the 4cm minimum range covers your closest target.

The breakout has standard header pins for soldering and mounting holes that align with Raspberry Pi HAT standoff spacing for secure attachment.
Connect VCC to 3.3 V or 5 V, GND to ground, and SDA/SCL to the I2C bus at address 0x29; the frequent error is forgetting pull-up resistors on the data lines.
Replace the module if ranging accuracy drifts beyond the specified ±25 mm tolerance or if the laser emitter degrades and readings become unreliable.
