The StarTech USB31000SPTB adds a 10/100/1000Mbps RJ45 port and a USB 3.0 pass-through to any laptop or desktop with a USB-A socket. It draws power from the bus and uses the ASIX AX88179A chipset for native driver support on Windows 7 and later, macOS 10.14 and later, Linux kernel 2.6.25 LTS and Chrome OS. The compact 5 x 1.4 x .7 inch enclosure weighs 1.5 oz and includes a driver CD.

Wired throughput and port headroom

The Gigabit Ethernet link negotiates at 10, 100 or 1000Mbps with full-duplex and Auto-MDIX crossover correction. The integrated USB 3.0 pass-through port preserves the host socket for a mouse, flash drive or other peripheral while the adapter is connected. Wake-on-LAN and VLAN tagging are supported for managed network environments.

Build integration and constraints

The adapter connects via a USB 3.0 Type-A male plug and requires an available USB-A port on the host. It operates over standard Cat5e or better cabling up to 100 metres.
