The PowerEdge R730 is a 2U rack server built around two Intel Xeon E5-2680 v4 processors, each running at 2.40 GHz with 14 cores and a 3.3 GHz turbo frequency. It ships with 512 GB of DDR4 2400 MHz registered ECC memory across 16 modules, leaving 8 of the 24 DIMM slots free for expansion up to 1.5 TB total capacity. This configuration targets midsize and large enterprises running data warehouses, e-commerce platforms, virtual desktop infrastructure or high-performance computing workloads.

SATA SSD array limited by controller

Storage is handled by a Dell PERC H730 1 GB controller that supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50, 60 and pass-through modes over 12 Gb/s SAS and SATA links. The eight installed 400 GB enterprise SATA SSDs connect through the same 6 Gb/s SATA interface, so sustained throughput is bounded by the SATA 6 Gb/s ceiling rather than the controller's SAS bandwidth. Network I/O uses a quad-port daughter card providing two 1 GbE and two 10 Gb SFP+ connections, but the 10 Gb links require compatible SFP+ modules and cabling not included with the server.

LGA 2011-3 socket locks CPU choice to Broadwell-EP

Both processor sockets are populated with the maximum supported count of two CPUs, so no further CPU upgrades are possible without replacing the existing E5-2680 v4 chips. The LGA 2011-3 platform and Intel C610 chipset restrict future processor options to the same Broadwell-EP family, preventing migration to newer architectures. Buyers needing more cores, higher clock speeds or support for later instruction sets must select a different server platform.
