The Dell PowerEdge R740 chassis arrives with two Xeon Platinum 8260L processors running at 2.4GHz, each delivering 24 cores and 35.75MB cache. 64GB of DDR4 ECC registered memory is installed across the available slots. The system targets virtualization hosts, database nodes and compute clusters that need high core counts in a 2U rack form factor.

8-bay 3.5 storage headroom

Eight front-accessible 3.5-inch bays connect to the PERC H730P RAID controller over SATA. No drives ship with the unit so capacity starts at zero and scales to the limit of the installed disks. The controller supports hardware RAID levels for redundancy or throughput, but the 10GbE 562T adapter and dual 750W supplies remain the same regardless of drive count.

DDR4 memory ceiling and PCIe constraints

The platform accepts up to 3TB of DDR4 when fully populated, leaving substantial headroom above the factory 64GB. Growth beyond that ceiling requires a newer processor generation not present in this chassis. The integrated graphics and iDRAC9 Enterprise remote management operate within the existing PCIe lane budget, so additional accelerator cards must fit the remaining slots and power envelope.
