The Dell PowerEdge R740xd2 is a 2U rackmount server built for storage-dense workloads. It ships with two Intel Xeon Gold 6230 processors running at 2.1 GHz with 3.9 GHz turbo, each providing 20 cores. The system includes 512 GB of DDR4-2666 ECC registered memory across 16 slots and a Dell PERC H330 12 Gb/s SAS/SATA storage controller. Twenty-six 3.5-inch drive trays support high-capacity SAS, SATA and SSD media.

Upgrade from Lower-Density or Single-CPU Platforms

This server replaces 1U or 2U systems that offer fewer drive bays or only a single processor. The jump is worth it when workloads demand both high core counts and local storage capacity in the same chassis, such as software-defined storage clusters, backup repositories or media archives. Dual 1100 W platinum power supplies and iDRAC 9 Enterprise management are included for redundancy and remote administration.

Verify Rack Space, Network Uplinks

Confirm the rack can accommodate a 2U form factor and that power distribution supports two 1100 W units. The onboard networking provides dual 1 GbE ports plus a Broadcom 57414 dual-port 10/25 Gb SFP28 OCP 2.0 mezzanine card; ensure compatible SFP28 transceivers and cabling are available. No drives are installed, so select SAS, SATA or SSD media that match the H330 controller and 3.5-inch tray count. Front bezel and ready rails are not included.
