Synology RX1217 is a diskless rackmount expansion unit that adds twelve SATA drive bays to compatible Synology RackStation servers. It connects through a high-bandwidth expansion cable and is managed entirely from the host DiskStation Manager interface. The unit ships with a single AC power cord and accessory pack for immediate deployment.

Administrators who need to grow an existing RAID volume on a supported RackStation can expand it online while services continue running. The enclosure also works as a separate local backup target. It does not operate as a standalone NAS, so buyers without a compatible RackStation cannot use it. Environments requiring dual power supplies should note the redundant option is a different model.
Twelve SATA bays linked by expansion cable
The enclosure provides twelve SATA 6 Gb/s drive slots that appear to the host as if they were internal bays. Drives are hot-swappable and the volume can be expanded on the fly without downtime. Operating temperature ranges from 5 to 35 °C and the unit fits a standard rack depth of 25.35 inches.
