Dense compute node for virtualised workloads

The Dell PowerEdge R630 fits a single Intel Xeon E5-2637 V3 quad-core processor running at 3.5 GHz with 16 GB of DDR4 memory in a 1U rack chassis. It targets environments that need high thread density per rack unit such as virtualisation hosts, container platforms or database nodes where memory can be expanded later.

Redundant power and hot-plug drive bays simplify

Two 750 W hot-swap power supplies share the load so a single failure does not take the server offline. Eight 2.5-inch hot-plug SAS or SATA bays connect to the H330 12 Gbps RAID controller supporting RAID 0, 1, 5, 10, 50 and 60, letting administrators replace drives without shutting down.

PCIe 3.0 and 1 GbE networking set the expansion

The system provides up to three PCIe 3.0 slots plus a dedicated PERC slot, limiting add-in cards to that generation's bandwidth. Networking defaults to a four-port 1 GbE daughter card with optional 10 GbE upgrades, so throughput-heavy workloads may saturate the built-in links before the CPU becomes the bottleneck.

Questions sur cet article

What SAS or SATA speed does the H330 12Gbps RAID controller cap the 2.5" drive bays at?

The H330 controller runs at 12Gbps, so each 2.5" hot-plug bay is limited to that SAS or SATA link rate.

What rack depth and clearance does the 1U chassis with 26.8" length and 750W redundant PSUs require?

The server is 26.8" long, 17.44" wide and 3.4" high; allow extra depth for cable bend radius behind the dual 750W supplies.

How is the single E5-2637 V3 installed, and which slot population rule is often missed?

The CPU drops into socket 1; the 16GB DDR4 must fill the 12 slots belonging to that processor first before any second CPU is added.
