What this cage does

The Rosewill RSV-SATA-Cage-34 converts three 5.25-inch drive bays into four hot-swap trays for 3.5-inch or 2.5-inch SATA and SAS hard drives. It targets server builders who need dense storage in a standard chassis. The steel and ABS construction is built for continuous operation. Compatible Rosewill chassis include the L4000U, L4500U and R4000U models.

Installation notes

Mount the unit into three adjacent 5.25-inch bays using the supplied screws and connect the single 120mm exhaust fan to a motherboard or fan controller header. Hot-swap requires the motherboard BIOS to be set to AHCI mode and each drive formatted under AHCI; without this the tray eject function will not work. Drive trays slide in from the front and lock with a key mechanism.

SATA and SAS limits

The cage passes SATA I, II and III signals and supports SAS at 6 Gbps only; faster SAS speeds are not supported. Bandwidth per drive depends on the host controller and the drive itself. The single rear fan provides baseline airflow but may be insufficient for four high-RPM enterprise drives under sustained load. No active backplane electronics are included.
