Dell PowerEdge R530 2U rack server

The Dell PowerEdge R530 is a 2U rack server built around a single Intel Xeon E5-2603 V3 six-core processor running at 1.6 GHz. It ships with 96 GB of DDR4 memory installed across twelve DIMM slots and includes two 2 TB 7.2 K SAS drives managed by a PERC H730 RAID controller. Dual 750 W redundant power supplies and an iDRAC8 remote-management module complete the base configuration.

Capacity and headroom

The system supports up to 384 GB of DDR4 memory using 4 GB, 8 GB, 16 GB or 32 GB modules at speeds up to 2400 MT/s, though actual speed depends on the installed processor. Eight 3.5-inch hot-plug bays accept SAS or SATA drives for a maximum raw capacity of 80 TB. The H730 controller provides 1 GB cache and 12 Gbps SAS connectivity with support for RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60. A second processor can be added to populate the remaining six DIMM slots and enable additional PCIe lanes.

Practical limits of the platform

Memory expansion stops at 384 GB because the twelve DIMM slots are the physical maximum and the chipset does not address larger modules. Storage growth is bounded by the eight drive bays and the 80 TB ceiling, so datasets beyond that scale require external enclosures or a different chassis. The PCIe layout provides three 3.0 slots and two 2.0 slots, limiting bandwidth for modern accelerators or high-speed networking cards. Network connectivity is fixed at four 1 GbE ports on the daughter card with no onboard 10 GbE option.
