Dense 1U rack server for virtualisation workloads

The PowerEdge R630 fits a dual-processor configuration into a single rack unit, making it suited to dense virtualisation hosts or database nodes where rack space is at a premium. Two Xeon E5-2637 V3 processors at 3.5 GHz deliver 16 threads for multi-threaded applications. Forty-eight gigabytes of DDR4 memory and two 300 GB 15 K SAS drives on an H730 controller provide a ready-to-run platform. Buyers who need GPU acceleration or more than eight drive bays should look elsewhere.

Tool-less rails and hot-swap components simplify

The chassis uses tool-less sliding rails for quick rack mounting and all eight 2.5-inch bays support hot-plug SAS or SATA drives. Dual 750 W redundant power supplies and the H730 RAID controller are also hot-swappable, so failed parts can be replaced without downtime. The integrated iDRAC8 Express gives remote console access before the operating system loads. Installers must verify rack depth because the unit is 26.8 inches long.

Maximum memory capacity is 48 GB

Although the platform supports up to 1536 GB across 24 DIMM slots, the installed 48 GB uses all slots available to the two fitted processors at the current density. Expanding beyond 48 GB requires higher-capacity DDR4 modules up to 128 GB each. The H730 controller handles RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 across the eight-bay backplane.
