Dense 1U compute platform

The Dell PowerEdge R630 packs two six-core Xeon E5-2620 V3 processors at 2.4GHz and 128GB of DDR4 into a single rack unit. It targets workloads that need high thread density and memory capacity in constrained cabinet space. The H330 RAID controller manages up to eight hot-plug 2.5-inch SAS or SATA drives. Dual 750W redundant supplies keep the node running through a power-module failure.

Upgrade from single-socket or lower-core nodes

Moving from a single-processor server or a quad-core dual-socket system adds twelve physical cores and twenty-four threads, cutting batch-window times for virtualisation hosts and database instances. The jump pays off when licensing is per socket and the application scales across twenty-four logical CPUs. Memory is already at the processor-rated ceiling of 128GB, so further expansion requires a processor change.

PCIe 3.0 and 1GbE ceiling

Three PCIe 3.0 slots plus a dedicated PERC slot limit accelerator or high-speed NIC upgrades to eight-lane bandwidth. The standard daughter card provides four 1GbE ports; optional 10GbE NDCs exist but cannot exceed the bus generation. Storage throughput tops out at the H330 12Gbps SAS interface, so all-flash arrays will saturate the controller before the drives.
