The Dell PowerEdge R630 packs two Xeon E5-2698 v3 processors at 2.3 GHz with 16 cores each and 512 GB of DDR4 ECC memory into a 1U rack chassis that accepts up to eight 2.5-inch drives. It is built for workloads that benefit from high thread counts and large memory capacity such as virtualization clusters, database servers and high-performance computing tasks. Remote management is handled by iDRAC8 Enterprise and networking includes two 10 GbE plus two 1 GbE ports. The PERC H730 controller provides hardware RAID for SAS and SATA drives.

Suited for scale-up workloads needing many cores

This server fits buyers who want a compact 1U box that can hold 1.5 TB of DDR4 across 24 DIMM slots and dual CPUs. It is not for buyers who need GPU acceleration because only integrated graphics are present. It is also not for buyers who require 3.5-inch drive bays or more than eight drive slots. The fixed 495 W redundant power supplies limit high-wattage add-in cards. Customers needing a different drive count, GPU support or higher single-thread frequency should evaluate other platforms.

Eight-bay 2.5-inch chassis with PERC H730 RAID

The single specification that decides fit is the 8SFF chassis paired with the PERC H730 SAS controller supporting SATA and SAS drives. It determines how many drives you can install and which RAID levels are available. The system ships without drives so you must supply compatible 2.5-inch SAS or SATA media.
