Dual-socket 1U server for dense compute

The PowerEdge R640 fits two Xeon Gold 5118 processors in a single rack unit, each running twelve cores at 2.3 GHz with a 3.2 GHz turbo. One hundred twenty-eight gigabytes of DDR4 2400 MHz registered ECC memory fill eight of twenty-four slots, leaving room for expansion up to three terabytes. The chassis includes redundant 750-watt platinum power supplies, iDRAC9 Enterprise remote management, and ready rails with bezel.

SAS storage limits and network mix

Eight 2.5-inch bays connect to a PERC H730P controller that supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 plus pass-through at twelve gigabits per second SAS and SATA. The installed drives are 300 GB 10K SAS hard disks; no solid-state drives are present. A quad-port daughter card adds two one-gigabit Ethernet ports and two ten-gigabit SFP+ ports, but no copper ten-gigabit or twenty-five-gigabit interfaces.

Upgrades from single-socket

Builders moving from a single-processor server gain a second CPU socket and double the core count without increasing rack height. Sites running less than 128 GB of RAM can use the sixteen free DIMM slots to scale toward the three-terabyte maximum. The jump is worth it when workloads need more parallel threads, larger in-memory datasets, or hardware RAID across eight SAS spindles.
