Dual-socket 1U density

The Dell PowerEdge R640 is a 1U rack server built for dense scale-out data centre workloads. It ships with two Intel Xeon Gold 6142 processors, each delivering 16 cores at a 2.6 GHz base frequency with a 3.7 GHz turbo. The system includes 128 GB of DDR4 2666 MHz registered ECC memory across eight modules, leaving 16 slots open for expansion up to 3 TB. A PERC H730P controller with 2 GB cache manages SAS and SATA drives through RAID levels 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 plus pass-through.

Eight-bay 2.5-inch SAS foundation

The chassis provides eight 2.5-inch drive bays populated with two 300 GB 10K SAS hard drives. This replaces smaller direct-attached storage or single-controller configurations where RAID flexibility and hot-swap redundancy are required. The jump is worth it when workloads need hardware RAID across multiple spindles with battery-backed write cache and the ability to scale capacity without leaving the 1U footprint.

Redundant platinum power under load

Dual 750 W platinum-efficiency power supplies share the load and maintain operation if one unit fails. The Intel X520/I350 daughter card supplies two 1 GbE and two 10 Gb SFP+ ports for balanced network throughput. iDRAC 9 Enterprise enables remote management, firmware updates and console access independent of the host operating system. Ready rails and a front bezel are included for immediate rack integration.
