The Dell PowerEdge R740xd fits twelve 3.5-inch drive bays in a 2U rack chassis. Two Xeon Gold 5218R processors at 2.1 GHz deliver 20 cores each for virtualisation or database workloads. Sixty-four gigabytes of DDR4 ECC memory are installed and the platform supports up to 3 TB total. The PERC H730P RAID controller manages SATA drives.

Front-loading bays and remote control

Twelve hot-swap bays sit at the front so drives can be swapped without pulling the server from the rack. Dual 1100 W power supplies provide redundancy for continuous operation. The iDRAC9 Enterprise licence gives full out-of-band management including virtual console and remote firmware updates. Integrated graphics handle basic display output without a discrete card.

Twenty cores per socket for heavy threads

Each Xeon Gold 5218R contributes 20 cores and 27.5 MB cache, giving 40 cores total for highly threaded applications. Buyers who need higher single-thread frequency or more than 40 cores should evaluate other processor options. The 10 GbE 562T adapter supplies two 10 GbE ports for storage or cluster traffic. No drives are included; storage must be selected separately.
