5 MP OV5647 Camera Module for Raspberry Pi

This 5 MP camera module uses the Omnivision OV5647 sensor to capture still images at 2592 x 1944 resolution and records video at up to 1080p. It connects directly to the CSI port on Raspberry Pi 5, 4, 3, 3B+ and other A/B series boards, making it suitable for hobbyists and developers adding vision to their projects. The fixed-focus lens covers general-purpose imaging without manual adjustment. Pi Zero models are not supported.

Sustained 1080p capture on the OV5647

During extended recording sessions the sensor maintains 1080p output without dropping frames, provided the host board can keep up with the data rate. The fixed-focus optics mean there is no hunting or motor noise that could interrupt long takes. Heat buildup stays modest because the module draws little power, so thermal throttling on the Pi itself is the limiting factor rather than the camera.

Simple CSI connection with common pitfalls

The ribbon cable plugs into the CSI connector on compatible Raspberry Pi boards and is recognised automatically by the standard camera stack. A frequent issue is inserting the cable backwards or not seating it fully, which results in no image or a garbled feed. Another common mistake is trying to use the module on a Pi Zero, which lacks the required CSI port. Enabling the camera interface in raspi-config or the newer rpicam-apps configuration is essential before the first capture.
