Pirate Audio Line-out DAC HAT

The Pimoroni Pirate Audio Line-out is a fully-assembled mini HAT that adds high-quality digital audio and a 1.3" IPS colour display to any 40-pin Raspberry Pi. It uses a PCM5100A DAC chip to deliver 24-bit 192KHz line-level output through a 3.5mm stereo jack. Four tactile buttons provide hardware playback control for local files or streaming services.

Upgrade from basic analogue output

This board replaces the Pi's built-in headphone socket with a dedicated I2S DAC for cleaner, higher-resolution sound. The jump is worth it when driving an external amplifier or powered monitors from local FLAC libraries or streaming platforms. It also adds a 240x240 pixel screen for album art and a physical interface that a bare Pi lacks.

Check 40-pin header and software setup

Verify your Raspberry Pi model has the standard 40-pin GPIO header before ordering. The HAT fits all 40-pin variants but will not connect to older 26-pin boards. You must run the Pimoroni installer to enable the I2S DAC, ST7789 display driver and button inputs on Raspberry Pi OS.

Perguntas sobre este artigo

Does the 40-pin HAT fit every Raspberry Pi with a 40-pin header?

Yes, the board is compatible with all 40-pin header Raspberry Pi models and uses the full 40-pin GPIO header for power, I2S audio, display and button signals.

What is the easiest way to get the I2S DAC, ST7789 display and four buttons working together?

Run the official Pirate Audio installer script on Raspberry Pi OS; it configures the PCM5100A DAC, the 240x240 IPS LCD and the four tactile buttons in one step.

If the 3.5 mm stereo jack wears out, can it be replaced without changing the whole board?

The jack is surface-mounted on the mini HAT, so replacing it requires SMD rework; most users would swap the entire board instead.
