Dual ten-core Xeon rack server

The Dell PowerEdge R530 is a 2U rack system built around two Intel Xeon E5-2650 V3 processors, each with ten cores at 2.3 GHz. Hyper-threading delivers 40 logical threads for virtualisation hosts, database nodes or multi-threaded application workloads. Thirty-two gigabytes of DDR4 memory are installed across the 12 DIMM slots. Redundant 750 W hot-swap power supplies support continuous uptime.

Upgrades from single-socket or lower-core systems

Moving from a single-socket server or a quad-core dual-socket platform adds the second ten-core processor and the second memory controller, doubling both thread count and memory bandwidth. The jump is worth it when licensing is socket-based and workloads scale across 40 threads, or when the 12 DIMM slots are needed to reach higher capacities. The H330 RAID controller adds hardware RAID 0, 1, 5, 10, 50 and 60 for arrays up to 80 TB across eight 3.5-inch hot-plug bays.

DDR4 memory ceiling and PCIe lane limits

The installed 32 GB matches the per-processor maximum supported by the E5-2650 V3, so further expansion requires processors that address larger DIMMs. The platform provides three PCIe 3.0 slots and two PCIe 2.0 slots via the Intel C610 chipset, limiting modern accelerator cards to 3.0 speeds and restricting total lane availability. The Matrox G200 video controller and four 1 GbE ports are fixed on the motherboard. iDRAC8 Express is included; Enterprise features and vFlash media require a licence upgrade.
