Server Purpose

The Dell PowerEdge R540 is a 2U rack server built for virtualization, database management and software-defined storage workloads. Dual Xeon Silver 4114 processors provide twenty cores at 2.2GHz with 3.0GHz turbo for multi-threaded performance. Sixty-four gigabytes of DDR4-2400 ECC memory supports reliable operation across business-critical applications. The twelve 3.5-inch bays deliver high-capacity local storage in a compact form factor.

Storage Upgrade Path

This configuration includes twelve 4TB 7.2K SATA drives managed by a PERC H730P controller with 2GB cache. The controller enables RAID levels 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 plus pass-through mode for flexible data protection. Buyers who want more storage density than twelve 3.5-inch drives provide will need a different chassis or external enclosure. The H730P battery-backed cache protects write operations during unexpected power loss.

Build Integration

Dual 750-watt platinum power supplies deliver redundant power for continuous uptime. Integrated dual-port Gigabit Ethernet handles baseline network connectivity without add-in cards. iDRAC 9 Express provides out-of-band remote management for monitoring and administration.
