Dual-socket 1U density

The Dell PowerEdge R640 packs two Intel Xeon Gold 6142 processors, each with 16 cores at 2.6 GHz, into a single rack unit. It ships with 768 GB of DDR4 registered ECC memory across all 24 slots. Eight 300 GB 10K SAS drives and a PERC H730P controller provide internal storage. Dual 750 W platinum power supplies and iDRAC9 Enterprise complete the package.

Upgrade from single-socket or smaller memory

Moving from a single-processor server doubles the core count to 32 and raises the memory ceiling to 3 TB. The jump is worth it when workloads such as virtualisation, database or high-performance computing need more parallel threads and larger datasets than a single socket can address. The board already holds the maximum of two processors, so further CPU expansion requires a new chassis.

12 Gb/s SAS controller and 10K spindle limits

The PERC H730P operates at 12 Gb/s over SAS and SATA, capping throughput to the speed of the installed 10 000 RPM drives. Random I/O will be bounded by mechanical latency, and sequential transfers cannot exceed the controller's 12 Gb/s lane rate. The network daughter card adds two 10 Gb SFP+ ports, but the 1 GbE links remain at their fixed line rate.
