The PowerEdge R640 is a 1U rack server built around two Intel Xeon Gold 6142 processors. Each CPU delivers 16 cores at 2.6 GHz with a 3.7 GHz turbo frequency. The system targets dense scale-out data centre workloads that demand high core counts in minimal rack space.

Sustained compute and storage throughput

Twenty-four DDR4 slots populated with 256 GB of 2666 MHz registered ECC memory feed the dual processors continuously. The PERC H730P controller with 2 GB cache drives eight 600 GB 10K SAS drives at 12 Gb/s, supporting RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 for consistent I/O under load. Redundant 750 W platinum power supplies maintain delivery during extended operation.

SAS 12 Gb/s and 10 GbE connectivity limits

The storage bus tops out at 12 Gb/s per lane, capping drive-to-controller bandwidth. Network I/O is handled by an Intel X520/I350 daughter card providing two 1 GbE and two 10 Gb SFP+ ports. The 1U chassis holds a maximum of eight 2.5-inch drives, so total raw capacity is bounded by the installed 600 GB SAS devices.
