This Dell PowerEdge R640 is a new 1U rack server built for dense scale-out workloads. Two Intel Xeon Silver 4116 processors provide 24 total cores at 2.1 GHz with 3.0 GHz turbo. The system ships with 256 GB of DDR4 2400 MHz registered ECC memory across eight 32 GB modules. A PERC H730P controller and dual 400 GB SATA SSDs handle storage duties.

Verify rack depth and network cabling

Confirm your rack can accommodate a 1U chassis with ready rails and that power distribution can supply two 750 W platinum hot-swap supplies. The installed quad-port daughter card delivers two 1 GbE and two 10 Gb SFP+ links, so plan matching switch ports and SFP+ modules. Memory uses DDR4 RDIMMs only; do not mix generations. The H730P supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60.

Fits dense virtualization and database tiers

The R640 frees rack space by packing dual-socket performance into 1U, leaving room for additional compute nodes. Eight 2.5-inch drive bays allow future storage expansion without a larger chassis.
