Dense Virtualisation Platform

The Dell PowerEdge R640 is a 1U rack server built for dense virtualisation, private cloud and high-performance computing workloads. Dual Xeon Gold 6148 processors provide 40 cores at 2.40 GHz with turbo up to 3.70 GHz. A 512 GB DDR4 memory pool supports large-scale consolidation. Eight 7.68 TB SATA SSDs deliver 61.44 TB of enterprise flash capacity. Windows Server 2022 Standard is licensed for 16 cores.

Build Integration

The server arrives with hot-swappable redundant power supplies and a rail kit for standard 1U rack mounting. A PERC H730 RAID controller with 2 GB non-volatile cache manages the eight drive bays. Broadcom BCM5720 quad-port 1 GbE networking handles baseline connectivity. iDRAC9 Express provides out-of-band management without an operating system. Memory and drives ship separately for on-site installation.

Thermals Power Noise

The 1U chassis uses front-to-rear airflow tuned for the dual 20-core processors and dense SSD array. Redundant power supplies share load and allow module replacement without downtime. Fan speeds scale with CPU utilisation and inlet temperature to balance cooling and acoustic output. Power draw varies with workload intensity across the 40 cores and storage subsystem.
