Ready 2U rack server

The Dell PowerEdge R730 arrives as a 2U rack-mount system with a single ten-core Xeon E5-2650 v3 running at 2.3 GHz and 96 GB of DDR4 memory already installed. Two 900 GB 10 K SAS drives and a PERC H730 RAID controller provide immediate storage redundancy. Dual 750 W hot-swap power supplies and an iDRAC8 remote-management module complete the baseline configuration.

Build integration

The chassis accepts up to eight 2.5-inch hot-plug SAS or SATA drives, leaving six bays free for expansion. Twenty-four DDR4 DIMM slots — twelve per processor socket — allow memory growth when a second CPU is added. Seven PCIe 3.0 slots plus a dedicated PERC slot support additional networking, GPU or storage cards. A DVD-ROM drive occupies the single media bay.

Capacity and headroom

The H730 controller manages RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 across a maximum of 64 TB of raw drive capacity. Installed memory sits at the 96 GB ceiling for the current single-processor layout; adding a second processor raises the platform limit to 1 536 GB. Four onboard 1 GbE ports handle baseline connectivity, while the NDC bay can be upgraded to 10 GbE for heavier traffic.
